Askinoff may be able to save a few bucks on a few common infections, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution for everyone.
Last week, it was revealed that a skin rash drug, a skin treatment that is FDA-approved, can cure a skin infection.
But experts say there’s a lot of research going on to find out how long the drug will take to work and how much it might have to cost. The drug’s manufacturer, Merck, says the price could be as low as $1 per dose. But a study that found a price of $50,000 for a 500mg dose of valacyclovir for the common cold, and $1.5 million for a 500mg dose for the flu, would be more than enough to pay for the drug.
While Merck doesn’t offer a discount for the generic version of the drug, it says it offers a generic version, Valtrex.
In a statement, Pfizer said that while there are no studies on Valaciclovir in patients taking the drug, they have already seen positive results in other patients.
Valtrex is the generic version of the drug.
But the researchers say the drug is still not approved for use in the American population and Merck says it will have to spend millions of dollars on research to get it approved. And it’s not going away.
“I don’t know if that will ever happen in the next five years,” says Dr. David Hirsch, a dermatologist at New York University, who worked on Valaciclovir and did not want to be named. “I think it’s going to take a lot more time to figure out that the market is just not as competitive as it used to be.”
The drug was first approved in 1981 as the first of a new class of antiviral agents, which includes drugs to treat herpes simplex infections and cold sores, among other uses.
“I just thought, ‘Oh my god, why don’t we just get started?’ It was so simple,” says Hirsch, who has worked on the drug for 15 years.
That’s not all.
Hirsch and his team were surprised when they came up with a drug that works against herpes simplex infections. The drug’s manufacturer, Novartis, says the price of valacyclovir is $4,500 for 500mg of the drug, and $3,500 for 500mg of valacyclovir. They also said the price of valacyclovir is $2,000 for a 500mg dose and $1,000 for 500mg tablets.
The drug is approved for use in adults and children over the age of 12. In people with a weakened immune system, valacyclovir may be taken with or without food. But the drug isn’t approved for use in children younger than 12. And that could make it expensive.
“I think that the price is really going to be the biggest barrier to bringing the market back into the mainstream,” says Hirsch. “The cost is going to be the biggest barrier.”
Dr. Michael Fauci, of the New York University Dermatology Center, says the company that makes valacyclovir doesn’t have as much advertising revenue as Merck does. He says he’s seen some ads for valacyclovir in that amount.
“It’s kind of a taboo thing for this company to do,” Fauci says. “But I’ve seen some people saying, ‘I’ve never seen that.’ ”
Valtrex is available by prescription only. It is used as an antiviral medication in the treatment of herpes simplex infections. But it can also be used in cold sores and genital herpes.
In a statement, Pfizer said that as of Dec. 1, 2018, the drug has not been approved for use in children.

Antiviral medicine may help shorten an outbreak by 1 or 2 days, if you start taking it as soon as symptoms appear. But outbreaks usually settle by themselves, so you may not need treatment.
Recurrent outbreaks are usually milder than the first episode of genital herpes. Over time, outbreaks tend to happen less often and be less severe. Some people never have outbreaks.
Some people who have more than 6 outbreaks in a year may benefit from taking antiviral medicine for 6 to 12 months. If you still have outbreaks of genital herpes during this time, you may be referred to a specialist.
How to deal with outbreaks yourself If you’ve been diagnosed with genital herpes and you’re having an outbreak:
